REDBIRDS "SUPERIOR" AT MUSIC

"Rome wasn't built in a day", "It takes a long time to turn a ship", you name the cliche and Winston Band Director Zach Keller had heard it.  In the Fall of 2013 he took over a music program that had not received a "1" rating at State since 1994.  The last three years have been a labor of love for both he and his students.  The focus for both director and students was to make Winston synonymous with excellence in music.  The Winston band is young (21 of its 24 members are sophomores or younger) but talented.  The students have bought into the program, worked hard, and this year they have began to see the fruits of their labors.

Taylor Smith

The accolades began rolling in on April 2nd when Sophomore Taylor Smith earned a "1" rating for her flute solo.  Ms. Smith will now represent Winston High School at the State Solo and Ensemble Contest April 28th and 29th where she will undoubtedly make us proud.  The students were excited about the recognition that a member of their band had received but they had their eyes on a bigger prize.  On April 7th the band traveled to Maryville to the campus of Northwest Missouri State University to compete in the MSHSAA Northwest Music Festival.  This is the highest level of competition for bands in the state.  The Winston band had been steadily building towards this contest all year.  Our band students did not dissapoint.  The hardwork that everyone had been putting in over the last several years all paid off as the Winston band earned a "Superior 1" rating for the first time in 22 years.  Congratulations to Mr. Keller and all of his band students.  They represented our school at the highest level and they are a big reason why: It is a Great Day to be a Redbird!

CONGRATULATIONS APRIL STUDENTS OF THE MONTH

The Faculty of Winston High School would like to congratulate our April Students of the Month:  Connor Christensen and Alexis Barnes.  The Student of the Month award is chosen by the teachers and administrators of Winston High School in order to recognize students who exemplify the excellence we look for in academics, character, and attitude.  Our school will only go as far as our students can take us.  These are two of our best and they are two of the reasons why: It is a Great Day to be a Redbird!

REDBIRDS HONOR THEIR OWN

On Tuesday night, the Winston Redbirds hosted their annual winter sports awards reception.  The 2015-2016 basketball season was a great one for both our boy's and girl's teams and several fans, athletes, and parents attended the event to recognize the accomplishments of our athletes.

Cheer Coach Hilari Taylor recognized members of both the Junior High and Varsity Squads for all of their hard work and the school spirit they showed during the long season.

Coaches Kayla Cheeney and Curtis May recognized the members of the girls and boys Junior High Teams for their effort and growth throughout the season.  The coaches talked about the tremendous potential of both teams and how with hard work they can accomplish great things for the Redbirds.

The night wrapped up with the recognition by our Varsity coaches of our boys and girls varsity teams.  Both teams had a tremendous season.  Our girls captured their first district title since 1992 and our boys captured their second consecutive district and sectional titles.

Coach Kayla Cheeney congratulated her girls on a great season.  The Varsity Girls finished with a record of 18-10 and a District Championship.  Coach Cheeney also recognized several girls who had earned honors either from the media, the team, or local coaches.

The final presenter of the night was Varsity Boy's Coach Eric Lewis.  Coach Lewis congratulated his team on a historic season.  The 2015-2016 season was the first time in school history that the Redbirds had an undefeated regular season.  The Redbirds finished their regular season at 24-0.  They took home a district title and also a victory in the Sectional round.  The Redbirds finished the year at 28-1 with their only loss coming to the undefeated State Champions (Stanberry).  Coach Lewis also recognized a number of athletes who had earned postseason honors.

Overall, it was a tremendous night for our athletes.  We recognized great accomplishments by both teams and individuals.  It should be noted that these accolades don't happen by accident, they are the end result of the years of hard work our coaches and players have put in.  All of the athletes recognized on Tuesday have invested lots of "sweat equity" into our program.  They are precisely the reason why:  It is a Great Day to be a Redbird!
